Graphics software

By Admin | Oct 29, 2008

What is graphics software? It is software that can be used to create, edit, and manage 2D picture designs. These computer designs may be headings, clip art, web graphics, backgrounds, logos, digital photos, or other kind of digital image.

There are several good graphic editing and designing software packages on the market. Deciding which one is right for you, really depends on your needs and your budget.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 (PC)
5 star rating

At the absolute top of the line, we have Adobe Photoshop. Unfortunately it comes with a hefty price tag of 500 pounds or 1,000 dollars. Also you will need a top of the line PC, otherwise it will run slowly. Photoshop is loaded with all the best and latest algorithms to do just about anything with a picture. Photoshop is the most widely used and there for experience with this software is more valuable in the corporate world. Is Photoshop worth it? The answer is: yes for heavy users and no for more casual users.

There is also a “Adobe Photoshop Extended CS3″ available to buy. This software adds support for 3D and motion-based content.

Windows XP / Vista / Vista Enterprise

CorelDraw X3 Graphics Suite (PC)
4 star rating

At nearly a tenth of the price, CorelDraw is a much cheaper than Photoshop. Also, I find the interface to be more intuitive and the learning curve less steep. In job adds you will frequently find that they want both Photoshop and CorelDraw experience.

Windows 2000 / XP / Vista / 98 / XP Tablet PC Edition

Paint Shop Pro 9 (PC)
4 star rating

Even cheaper, Paint Shop Pro is a good basic design program. If you are only reworking images to post online or add to a web page, this is a good solution for you. I would not use this, to create logos, because it is not powerful enough. Paint Shop Pro’s interface is simple and easy to learn.

Windows 98 / Me / XP / NT / 2000

Be warned all 3 these products have fanatical users, who will claim that their solution is the only one to use.

If you are new to Photoshop or CorelDraw I recommend that you purchase a book about it, with the software.
